Comino, Malta
Blue Lagoon, Malta

Where the waters are simply too blue to be true.

The rumors you hear on the way to the ferry seem pulled far out of proportion even to your own ears. These tales speak of waters so clear, in the most sparkling shade of turquoise that one would suspect ink had been spilt into the ocean if they didn’t know better. They paint vivid images of waving fronds of soft coral and darting fish right before your eyes.

And yet, as the ferry approaches the small bay, a veil drops away from Comino Island. Limestone cliffs and coves of chalk white streaked with brown rear up first to create the impression of a secret being revealed just to you. It is with a snap of the fingers that Blue Lagoon steps forward, the small, shallow bay bordered by Cominotto slightly further off. All of a sudden, the stories you heard are no longer a figment of your imagination but a sight to be touched, felt and experienced to the fullest. Scuba diving or snorkeling gear strapped on, dozens in the deeper end immerse themselves in the water. Still more line the white sand in beach towels and sunscreen. The Blue Lagoon is quite literally a natural pool carved into the side of the tiny spit of land, an aberration and fantasy too good to be true.

Tips Before You Go
The site is extremely popular with tourists and at any one point in time, the beach is almost completely obscured by beach umbrellas and towels. Even the lagoon is packed with bobbing yachts which had ferried passengers in, making it an obstacle course to enjoy the waters without knocking into any of the vessels. Good planning of time in addition to certain concessions made for the crowd are necessary if you are to fondly recall the memories you created at the lagoon.
