Blue Caves

The boundaries between reality and make-believe will vanish before your eyes as you drift into the quiet wonder that is the Blue Caves.

Light filtering in through the single break in the cave’s roof glances off the waters, across vines and grey rock to immerse you in the telltale tint of blue. It’s almost mystical the way the rocks of the Blue Caves appear to radiate blue, bathed in the golden sunlight.

Accessible only by boat from the Makris Gialos Beach, Agios Nikolaos Port and Cape Skinari, the Blue caves are found towards the North of the island Zante. With great depths and crystal clear waters, the Blue caves are a favorite for divers as they hope to chance upon the protected sea turtles in their natural habitat. The largest cave Kianoun, or Blue Grotto, has a sufficiently large entrance to allow passage for small boats. As you attempt to capture the ethereal view within snapshots, do look out for the lone tower of limestone emerging from the still blue waters. The Ortholithos is a vertical rock formation close to the Blue Caves and is one of the many rock formations that have been sculpted by the gently rocking waves and summer breeze. A land sculpted into art by nature, the Blue Caves are nothing short of a fantasy come true.

Tips Before You Go
The Blue Caves are minutes away from the Shipwreck Beach of Zante so look out for tours offering boat rides that cover both sites in one. Given the highlight of the caves are the blue waters showered in golden sunlight, the best times to visit are in the mornings or noon. Fret not if you find yourself unable to catch a boat for that timing though as the caves lit ablaze by the setting sun is just as breathtaking a sight.
