Black Sand Beach, Vik

The stunning Black (literally) Sand Beach of Vik was born out of volcanic ashes.

In the remote village of Vik in Iceland’s southern region is a unique lava beach that would have been completely black (and grey too, actually) if not for the blue sky and the occasionally foamy seawater. Known as the Black Sand Beach or simply as Reynisfjara, it is a black shingle beach filled with sand and gravel of all shapes and sizes, massive cliffs, basalt columns and even huge, dark caves. There are scenes from the famous Hollywood movies Noah and Star Trek: Into Darkness that were shot here. From the shore, you will see two big basalt chunks that rise out of the sea – they are called Reynisdrangar. According to a local legend, they were once two sea trolls who were trying to pull a ship from the sea. Unfortunately, during sunrise, the poor trolls turned into rocks, getting stuck in the sea forever. As we said earlier, there are also cool caves here for the brave at heart, but just don’t enter them when the tide is high as you might get trapped inside. Reynisfjara is definitely one of those beaches in the world that you shouldn’t miss.

Tips Before You Go
If you wish to see the caves and rock formations up close, then try to visit this stunning beach during the low tide. The currents here are rather strong, so swimming is not recommended, no matter how good of a swimmer you think you are. Keep a close eye on the basalt cliffs as well, as these are popular nesting grounds for the adorable puffin birds.
