Blaca Hermitage

From rags to riches – the true history of monks who made it big.

Lying on the Croatian Coast in Brac Island is the Blaca Hermitage. What was once a monastery set up by two Glagolitic monks seeking safe haven in the 16th century is now partially a museum. The monastery was set up in a cave and despite its rocky beginnings, it prospered. Producing wares such as oil, honey and wine for sale, the monks became wealthy. Upon touring the museum, you will see expensive items that the monks purchased, such as a 400kg piano and a printing press from 1894.

Tips Before You Go
The only way to get to Blaca Hermitage is by foot, so make sure to bring plenty of water and to wear comfortable shoes! In fact, it is recommended that you bring some food as well, because there are no rest stops along the way for you to purchase food or water. Take note that you are not allowed to take pictures inside the monastery, and that there are surveillance cameras in every room. Regardless, the unique atmosphere of the monastery will definitely be engraved in your hearts and minds.
