Binondo Church (Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz)

A church for Chinese converts in Manila, Philippines.

The Binondo Church, otherwise known by locals as Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz or Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish, is situated in Binondo district in the capital city of Manila, The Philippines. It was established by Dominican priests all the way back in 1596 specifically for Chinese migrants who had converted to Christianity. The original building was demolished in 1762 by British air strikes and a new refurbished granite church was built on the same site in 1852 but again it was damaged during WWII. Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, who was born to a Chinese father and Filipino mother, went on to train this church before spreading his missionary efforts to Japan where he was martyred for refusing to renounce his faith. He then became the country's first saint and was canonised in 1987. A large statue of him sits at the front of the temple and has become a common attraction for visitors. Masses in the church are held in various languages including Tagalog, Mandarin, English and even Hokkien.

Tips Before You Go
If you happen to be Catholic, you should drop by to attend the mass as it is a good cultural experience. But do be careful of pickpockets who may tend to stand around the exterior of the church.
