Bildmuseet

A chic space befitting the study of the 21st Century artistic form.

Once elected the European Cultural Capital, Umeå has throughout its lifetime given rise to cultural giants and maestros creating generations of artists and thought changers. Bildmuseet, clad in striped Siberian Larch to match its brethren is one of the latest additions to the family. It stands proud over the Ume River, the single illuminated block a wavering mirage over the water’s surface. A composite of 7 floors, Bildmuseet creates space for exhibition halls and an auditorium, empty walls prepared in wait for intriguing Contemporary Art. The open corridors branching through its interiors like its veins lead to works by renowned architects and artists. Bildmuseet reveals how the shared laughs and thoughts of Charles and Ray Eames led to their revolutionary lifestyle creations and furniture. It invites artists from several continents away to pour their grief into its vessels in the aftermath of war and poor governance. Always shifting, always changing, the only constant in Bildmuseet is its commitment to spreading the depth of art.

Tips Before You Go
Weekly, the center conducts an event known as Art Fridays which merges networking and performances so that you can critique and appraise the work in focus over sips of champagne and finger food. The line-up is ever changing since all the exhibitions at the Bilmuseet are temporary, the only similarity being how they revolve around the central theme of contemporary art, photography, architecture and design.
