Big Onofrio’s Fountain

Discover the structure that was instrumental in providing clean water to the city of Dubrovnik.

Would you want to drink water from a fountain built almost 600 years ago? This might sound strange, but the water from Big Onofrio's fountain, situated in front of St. Saviour Church in Old Town, Dubrovnik, is in fact drinkable. This 16-sided fountain was once lavishly decorated and the saving grace for the people of Dubrovnik, who used to face problems with their water supply before Italian architect Onofrio resolved this issue for the locals.

Each of the sixteen sides was decorated with "maskerons", or stone-carved masked faces. Unfortunately, natural disasters and wars have damaged this once magnificent fountain. Nevertheless, the water remains drinkable; some might say that it is even better than its bottled counterpart.
