Bicheno Blowhole

From the rough granite back of the slumbering earthen whale rises a tremendous spurt of water, the Bicheno Blowhole a truly spectacular quirk of geography.

Set on the edge of the quiet fishing and holiday resort of Bicheno, the Bicheno Blowhole is a somewhat unrecognizable fissure, identified only by a single diamond-shaped rock Hunkering down behind a small ridged rock shield further afield, the sudden spurt of water arcing across the sky before pattering down onto the ground ringing it is bound to take you by surprise. That colossal arc and explosive release of air and seawater into the sky is the result of a subterranean tunnel. The outcome of each wave colliding and sending jets of pressurized water here will steal your breath away. The sudden flurry of panic overtaking the beat of your heart, the mad scramble for shelter amidst the flat foreshore and the subsequent drenching in the frigid sea water are all part of the experience. Be careful not to lose your footing in the rush, or your camera for that matter as it’s not uncommon for your devices to suffer an unfortunate crack against the cracked ground beneath your feet. From a safer vantage point a few meters away, it’s possible to let your imagination run wild. Picture the artful fall of sea foam and water as laughing faces and roaring devils for the laughs before the spout falls silent once more and the mirage is broken. The Bicheno Blowhole is sure to give you a whale of a good time and leave you with photographs capturing both the power and beauty of the land.

Tips Before You Go
A word of advice, wait for a few outbursts from the ground before attempting to capture the perfect shot. Don’t rush unnecessarily, as these spurts of water will continue throughout the day. In fact, rushing to take shots might cause you to trip and fall, and perhaps even break your camera. You wouldn’t want to end your holiday on a sour note would you?
