Belvedere Cannone

Painter’s square.

Overlooking shimmering turquoise lagoons, majestic craggy-faced limestone cliffs, and a breath-taking view of the expansive ocean horizon, Belvedere Cannone is mother nature’s gift for us mere mortals, worth every bit of effort to get there. Luckily, the journey up to the stunning viewpoint is not long (approximately 20-minutes), and can be accessed via this route: From Piazza Umberto I, the main square of Capri, head down Via Madre Serafina followed by Via Castello, to get to Belvedere Cannone.

Named after a strategic cannon placed by the French on the plateau in 1808, the attraction garnered attention for its incredible vantage point over the years, later becoming known as Malerplatte (Painter’s square) for the vast number of German painters who stopped by to paint the surrounding dramatic natural scenery. Belvedere Cannone offers stunning views of the famed Faraglioni rocks, the intriguing Sirens’ Rock, the Carthusian Monastery, the magnificent Gardens of Agustus, as well as the prehistoric station the Grotto of Ferns, and is often regarded as the most idyllic and tranquil viewpoint in the island of Capri.
