Bell Tower, Dubrovnik

Check out one of Dubrovnik’s oldest and most charming mysteries.

At the end of Stradun, next to Sponza Palace in Luža Square, Dubrovnik, lies a bell tower, standing tall at 31m. In the upper portion of this bell tower, you will notice two figures striking the bell. These two bronze figures, named Maro and Baro, are one of Dubrovnik's oldest unsolved mysteries, as nobody knows who made them or how they even came about. They are referred to as the "Zelenci", or "the Greens" in English, due to the formation of green patina over their surfaces.

The current Maro and Baro are copies, with the originals kept in the Cultural History Museum when the bell tower was undergoing restoration. The original tower was demolished in 1928, as it was damaged by earthquakes. If you would like to witness this mystery first hand, we recommend that you head down at noon, as the tune of the bell tower's antique bells chiming is played at that time daily.
