Bear Mountain Bridge

Across the Hudson River.

The Bear Mountain Bridge was built in a time where automobiles were becoming all the rage, and waiting for a ferry to take your car across the river stretched overnight. It was the world’s longest suspension bridge after its completion in 1924, before being outshone by the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia 19 short months later. While it is not the fastest way across the Hudson River, it certainly is one of the most scenic, with the Bear Mountain State Park right next to it. In autumn, the surrounding foliage paints the valley in a glorious mix of red, orange and gold, and is well-worth the detour if you have the luxury of time.
