Bastion Square, Mdina

Down the streets of Villegaignon and into a time capsule laid out in the open.

Wherever you turn in the alleys of Mdina, you are met with cream, sandstone and summer smiles. The ancient city carries an air of fallen grace, the buttressed fortresses and wide columns a recollection of the power it once held. Romans, Normans, the French and others, every ruling civilization has come to brush a trace upon Bastion Square, the main marketplace of the city. A paperbacked volume in hand and a wandering heart barely tethered to your chest, wander the streets of Mdina till you reach the square. Pay careful attention to the carefully molded door knockers in the likeness of lions, big cats and mythical creatures gaping at you. Once at the square, sink into the atmosphere with a steaming cup in hand at a café and simply let time pass you by. The endless stream of tourists and locals are a collage, a constantly shifting landscape in your view.

Tips Before You Go
It may not be obvious at a glance but Bastion Square is actually located at the edge of Mdina. Beyond the rock parapets is the surrounding city of Rabat, an extension of the dusty colors around you on a much grander scale. In the distance is Mosta dome, the signature dome thought to be one of the biggest in the world. Unsurprisingly, the short barrier is often crowded with selfie-stick wielding tourists and visitors armed with cameras.
