Did someone say San Francisco? You heard rightly, but the Basilica of San Francisco is actually located in Buenos Aires. It has absolutely no connection to the city in America, but is so named because it belongs to the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscan Order for short), and is thus rather misleading. It doesn’t help that this church is so often confused with the Santa Domingo Convent. If this interesting coincidence isn’t enough to pique your interest, a quick look at the building will capture your attention more securely. The church has an elaborate and beautiful façade done in the Neo-Baroque style, with its stark lines making a cutting impact against the Argentine skyline. It also has a tumultuous history, going through several large-scale remodellings throughout its centuries-old existence before arriving at its current status as a National Historic Monument. With each revamp, more is discovered about the church’s past. In 2007, a time capsule from the late 19th century was even found inside the head of a statue of Dante!
