Basilica of Sant’Abbondio

An exhibit of Romanesque architecture, this church is a monument to early Medieval Christianity.

For those interested in the history of Christianity, one church in Italy that is an absolute must-visit would have to be the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio. The beautiful quaint grey walls of this monument tell the story of early Medieval Christianity, with it being built over a 5th century church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, who were Jesus’ apostles. This was done way back in 1095 AD, making it a historical treasure. It is also well known as a prime example of the Romanesque style of architecture in Europe, with it being viewed as a shining paragon of that particular style. Do visit here to see the wonderfully painted frescoes with their beautiful renditions of famous Biblical scenes. Despite being re-painted way back in the 14th century, they look as if they were freshly painted! Surely you wouldn’t want to miss out on them now would you?
