Basilica of San Zeno, Verona

See the fascinating Basilica of San Zeno where according to legend, Romeo and Juliet were married in its crypt.

The Basilica of San Zeno is probably regarded as the best church to see in the entirety of Verona. Located in the vicinity of Castelvecchio, the church was built in honour of San Zeno, who is the patron saint of the city. Its façade is no doubt impressive, with its Romanesque architecture and striped brick-and-stone basilica cutting a striking figure that is instantly recognisable. Keep your eyes peeled for the large rose window as well. Known as the ‘Wheel of Fortune’, this window is another iconic hallmark of this beautiful church. But take a step closer and you might be left in shocked. On its 12th-century bronze doors, you will see carvings of an exorcism taking place, with a demon being forcefully yanked out of a woman’s mouth. With that being the first thing you see at the doorsteps, you can be rest assured that the interior of the church is equally enigmatic.

Step inside and you will discover all sorts of hidden gems, such as the meticulously restored Majesty of the Virgin altarpiece designed by Mategna. It is so well restored that you wouldn’t even notice that extensive restoration works had been done in the first place. While that may be the first thing that catches your eye in the church, don’t forget to look up and around you. The beautiful vault ceiling and frescoes orgingating from the 13th and 14th centuries adorn the walls here, making this church an art masterpiece in itself. Don’t forget to take a peek at the mysterious polychromatic statue of San Zeno, known as “San Zeno Laughing”. And if you’re brave enough, why not stop by the huge crypt of San Zeno as well? It is said that his corpse glows at times in the transparent sarcophagus where he lies.
