Basilica of San Francisco el Grande

Pay your respects and be awestruck by one of the largest fresco-painted domes in the world.

Whatever your religion may be, you may find the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande a worthwhile stop when in Madrid. The Roman Catholic Church is known for the intricate fresco on the dome. 33m in diameter and 58m in height, this dome is one of the largest in the world. Painted by the respected artist Francisco de Goya, he even painted himself into the fresco (yellow shirt, on the right side of the fresco). This magnificent monument was finally completed in 1784 after some hiccups, and is now open to the public from 10.30am-12.30pm and 4-6pm from Tuesday to Saturday all year round, except for July and August, where it is open from 10.30am-12.30pm and 5-7pm from Tuesday to Sunday.
