Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
Where Religion meets Art.
The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, more commonly known as dei Frari, is almost 700 years old. Its lackluster exterior may not be a treat for the eyes, but is sharply contrasted with the grand interior design, decorated with many notable works of art. When you enter the church, your attention will immediately be drawn to the famous altarpiece, “Assumption of the Virgin" by renowned Renaissance artist Titian. The artwork depicts Virgin Mary's ascension towards heaven and is considered a monumental piece in Titian's career, setting him on the ranks of Michelangelo and Raphael. Other exemplary works include a statue of John the Baptist by Donatello as well as Madonna and Child by Giovanni Bellini.
