Basilica di Santa Croce

Hailed as the largest Franciscan church in the world, the Basilica di Santa Croce houses sixteen chapels and more.

A spectacular landmark of historical and religious significance in Florence, the Basilica di Santa Croce is famed for its magnificent frescoes designed by Giotto and his disciples. It is more than just a church, especially when you consider that it has sixteen chapels and is also the burial ground of some famous Italians such as Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli. Be captivated by the splendid shades of colored marble gracing the neo-Gothic façade, while you participate in the excellent audio tour of the tombs of famous Italian figures.

Be uplifted by the myriad of colorful frescoes, with the most prominent ones found in the Bardi di "Mangona" Chapel. Look out for the "farmer" Crucifix too, which is a rustic version of Christ. Another highlight is the Baroncelli Chapel, the site of one of the most atrocious crimes in Florentine history, where Bernardo Baroncelli lodged a dagger in the chest of Giuliano de' Medici. However, it is the work of Taddeo Gaddi that truly enthralls. It would seem that the virtuous "Life of the Virgin" attracts more visitors as compared to a sordid past.
