Basilica di San Marco

Once known as the Chiesa d’Oro (Church of Gold), visit the dazzling Basilica di San Marco.

One of the most prominent cathedrals in Venice, the Basilica di San Marco displays the charm of Italo-Byzantine architecture. Located at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, this architectural masterpiece greets you with bronze replicas of the Horses of Saint Mark. The real treasure however, lies within. Your eyes will definitely be overwhelmed by the gorgeous gold mosaics, which cover an area of about 8000 m2 and is symbolic of Venetian power and wealth. Gaze at the magnificent Life of Christ, which occupies much of the roof, with its ornate designs detailing his miracles in 29 scenes.

Be enthralled by the elaborately tessellated 12th century marble floor, with beautiful geometric patterns and animal designs. If you can, try to spot the two cocks carrying a trussed-up fox, which was interpreted by some to refer to the French conquest of Milan in the Italian Wars. This cathedral is definitely a treasure trove of beautiful art.
