Basilica del Santisimo Sacramento

Marvel at one of the most beautiful basilicas in Buenos Aires.

Consecrated in 1916, the Basilica del Santisimo Sacramento was commissioned by Mercedes Castellanos de Anchorena. Without doubt, the church is one of the most luxurious in Buenos Aires, and if you’re keen to discover Argentine heritage, this is the place to visit. The eclectic style of the church reflects a mixture of elements and different styles from several eras. The basilica’s marvelous towers are a sight to see, three of which rise from the façade. Step inside to gaze at the neo-Gothic interior and white marble statues. The gold and silver ornaments transform the three naves of the basilica into a stunning sight, each separated by columns.

The wooden sculptures and collections of stained glass, blue granite and Venetian mosaic add to the grandeur of the basilica. Don’t miss the lavish altar at the front, and the ornate organ will definitely capture your attention. It’s no wonder that the church has witnessed many marriages of the wealthy of Argentina. Of course, not all marriages took place - Corina Kavanagh, a rich and respected woman of her time, wished for the son of the Mercedes Castellanos de Anchorena to marry her daughter. He refused and Corina, vengeful, ordered the construction of the Kavanagh building between the basilica and the Anchorena residence, preventing the family from having a view of the basilica.
