Basílica de la Macarena

Visit Seville’s most beloved.

The Virgin of Hope of Macarena - Seville’s eternal treasure, is found within the mustard yellow walls of the Basilica de la Macarena. The façade makes an impression on the visitor from first glance and continues to wow as you take the first step in. The interior is elaborate and filled with ornate gold that frames the sculpture of La Macarena, given her an otherworldly glow. Also known as La Esperanza, La Macarena is the patron saint of matadors.

She stands behind the main altarpiece, in elaborate attire and an expression so finely sculpted her despair is almost palpable. Five crystal teardrops flow down her face in eternal sadness. The emerald brooches on her dress glint in the light, given to her image by the famous 20th-century matador, José Gómez Ortega, who was known more popularly as Joselito el Gallo. Following his death in the ring and funeral, la Macarena wore all-black for the first and only time recorded in Spanish history. While in Seville, you cannot miss this basilica.
