Basel Waterfront

You could spend hours staring at the Basel waterfront and never feel bored, as the picturesque mishmash of stately brick buildings is a feast for the eyes.

Basel is known as the “gateway to the Rhine River”. Part of this 765 mile long international river splits Basel into two, and along its banks are restaurants and shops galore. The atmosphere is alive with zealous street performers putting on a show, vendors doling out fresh hot steaming street food, and people from all walks of life gathered sitting, chatting to each other, and generally having a good time on the waterfront. When the sunshines on the riverfront, glorious views of colourful flags and glistening water make the scene a major tourist attraction.

Across the river stretches the magnificent Mittlemere bridge, near the Old Town of Basel. The historic image of the 14th century St Martin Church is also a staple in the waterfront silhouette, and just one of the buildings which give the waterfront it rustic charm. A popular activity is the crossing of the river by traditional medieval ferry boat: a boat which glides silently across the river at the ideal pace for taking in the full glory of the views. Powered only by the force of the natural current of the water, a friendly boatman will guide the ferry across relying on a simple rudder to steer. The experience is an affordable, convenient and unique joy that will get you where you need to go in the funnest possible way. Try something new and have a ball while you’re at it!

Tips Before You Go
A note of caution is that on the Gross Basel side, after alighting from the boat you will have to climb a long flight of stairs, which might be a challenge for young children, the elderly or those with disabilities.
