Basel Historical Museum

The best place to discover the world in another time.

It doesn’t get more impressive than the Basel Historical Museum. One of the largest and most important buildings of its kind in Switzerland, it will provide you with the most comprehensive experience of life in Switzerland throughout the centuries. The sheer attention to detail and intricacy of the exhibits recreate an entire world from the past. It is an exhibition beyond the wildest dreams of any history buff, and yet is so accessible that you don’t need any prior knowledge to understand what you are seeing. If you’ve ever harboured dreams to take a time machine and experience life in a different era, or see a time capsule that preserved historical artifacts, well, this is it. Each item in the museum has been lovingly preserved and sorted into various categories: cultural history, home life, music and transport. The collection is so vast that it even spills over to the neighbouring town of Münchenstein, leaving room for endless wonder.

Tips Before You Go
As the museum exhibits are in German, it is recommended that non-German speakers get a free tablet at the desk to read the explanations in a language of your choice. Also, do make a detour to the cathedral treasury where you can find some gorgeous stained glass windows and a beautiful altarpiece.
