Barzan Towers

Watching over the land in formidable fashion.

Looking like the image of Doha you would expect to be greeted by a century ago, the Barzan Towers takes you back in time. That makes sense considering the towers were built in the late 19th century. In the 1910s however, the 16m tall towers underwent renovation at the orders of Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani, who wanted to use this space to keep an eye on enemy Ottoman soldiers. In addition, the towers were used to study the moon patterns, as this is an integral part of the fasting month of Ramadan. Those of you unfamiliar with the language may not have released that “Barzan” translates to mean “high place”, an apt description for the tops of the towers. It is worth noting that after going through renovation in 2003 again, the towers now have air conditioning inside, making visiting the Barzan Towers in the hotter months more bearable.
