Barracks Arch

See the structure that guarded the guards.

At the corner of Malcolm and Elder Street in Perth, you will find an iconic structure with an interesting past. The Barracks Arch is all that remains of the Pensioner Barracks, a residential area made for Pensioner Guards in 1866. These Pensioner Guards, who were retired British soldiers, came to Australia to be employed as convict guards. The increased need for such guards was due to the British government transporting convicts into Western Australia from 1850- 1868. The Barracks Arch originally served as the entrance to the rest of the residential area of the Pensioner Barracks, which was demolished as the Australian government decided the buildings were no longer necessary, much to the dismay of many Australians. To pay homage to this Tudor-style arch, head down to the Barracks Arch.
