Baron Beach

A beach in Kemandang Village, 23km south of Wonsori City in Yogyakarta.

Though it takes about 2 hours to reach Baron Beach from the city of Yogyakarta, many head down there because of its secluded nature and its soft sands. One of the 8 beaches in South Yogyakarta, Baron Beach is particularly known for its natural scenery. Located in the Kidul Mountain area, the beach is surrounded by limestone hills that offer to be great hiking trips should you take up the challenge to climb them. Taking you through the hills with their lush vegetation and to a small lighthouse, the hiking trail is a good workout that isn’t too hard and definitely won’t deter newcomers. A favoured camping ground among the locals, you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to pitch up your tent in the hills around Baron Beach!

The waters around the beach are for those who like big waves and, unlike many of the beaches in south Yogyakarta, it is possible to swim there as long as you don’t go beyond the demarcated line. It’s also a great spot for kite-flying, a favourite past-time among the local kids. You can even hire a boat to take you out to the limestone cliffs, where you can see the caves formed by the waves crashing against the cliffs for over millions of years.

The other main attraction of the beach has to be the fish and seafood stalls that line up along the beach, offering the best fish, oysters, shrimps and prawns caught in the area. With steamed rice, the seafood tastes absolutely heavenly!
