Baphuon Temple

Awe at the magnitude and history of this beautiful, mystic temple.

Established in the 11th century, this three-tiered temple mountain Baphuon is an incredible masterpiece of Baphuon-style architecture - with ornate carvings decorating almost every wall face. This beautiful antiquated temple has a rich history to boot - originally a Hindu temple dedicated to the Lord Shiva in the 11th century, by the turn of the 15th century, it had been converted into a Buddhist temple. Adorned with statues of Hindu deities and Buddhist figures, the temple’s decoration is testament toits rich cultural heritage.

However, by the end of the 20th century, much of the temple had fallen into utter ruin. The reign of the Khmer Rouge further worsened the decline of the once-beautiful temple. With the masterful direction of architect Pascal Royere, 51 years later, the Baphuon was been restored to its former glory. Dubbed the ‘world’s largest jigsaw puzzle’, archaeologists had to work painstakingly hard, taking the temple apart piece by piece, to curate and restore the temple to what it is today. What ancient hands have touched, modern ones have reinforced, and so Baphuon will continue to stand through the ages. Visit this temple and take in the serenity and beauty of its marvellously intricacy. Lose yourself in its mystic charm as you gaze at the beauty of this pyramid-shaped sandstone monument.
