Banteay Srei

Marvel at the intricate, unique beauty of this temple carved from pink stone.

Boasting exquisitely intricate carvings cut into red sandstone, the ancient Banteay Srei, which was constructed in 967 AD, is a phenomenal Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva. Considered to be a jewel in the crown of Angkorian art, the red sandstone structure of the temple gives off pinkish hues when struck by sunlight, thereby lending itself to splendid views.

Astonishingly, these carvings, many of which are in three dimensions, have been well preserved to this day, and feature carvings of women holding lotus flowers and even re-creations of scenes from the Hindu epic Ramayana. The towers of Banteay Srei are adorned with beautiful divinities and filigree relief work, adding to the mystical charm of the citadel. After revelling in the mystic and magic of the sacred temple, enjoy the exhibition on the temple’s history and restoration, and hop on a tranquil boat ride through the lotus pond behind the temple. Refresh yourself at the eateries surrounding Banteay Srei and spend some time finding memorabilia of this ancient place at one of the shops nearby. Banteay Srei is a moment in history suspended in time, where soft echoes of a past life can still be heard from its intricate walls of pink stone.
