Constructed in the early 12th century and named after an ethnic group of mountain people that hailed from Indochina, the Banteay Samre is a temple dedicated to Hindu while incorporating an architecture style similar to the many temples in the Angkor ruins.


Although no inscription that tells of this temple’s origins has yet been found of this little gem, the intricate carvings of gods, men and beast within its halls are is of the classic art of the middle ages, a styling mightily similar to ones used in the Angkor Wat and the Bayon temple. Situated away from the main tourist attractions, this temple is majestic in its own right, and is reminiscent of a time long before our existence. A peculiar feature of this temple that sets it apart from the rest of the monuments in the Angkor area has to be its interior moat, which when filled with water lends it to a spectacular
