Kissamos, Greece
Balos Lagoon

A beachside of exotic pink sand, glittering seas and curious wildlife: what more could one ask for in a beach?

Wading out into the warm and shallow waters tickling your feet, one would feel completely disconnected from the world while simultaneously being tied down by the whispering waves and rustling trees around. The Balos Lagoon is a blue eye on the north-western end of the beach paradise of Crete sought yearly by thousands of beachgoers and wayfarers.

Gliding across the waters from Kissamos port, cruise boats drop of passengers on the shores of Balos daily. The postcard perfect landscape of aquamarine blue satin around the mounds of pebbles and rocks off the beach edge makes the lagoon one of the most highly photographed beaches of Crete. Against the blue waters, the pink tinged sands stand out even more boldly, giving you a satisfying view for an afternoon siesta. Beyond the rock mounds are deeper waters filled with snorkelers hunting for underwater treasures. Balos Lagoon is no doubt a siren’s call for the beach lovers in Greece.

Tips Before You Go
Given that you’re most likely to reach Balos Lagoon by boat, pick out a cruise which stops by the stone outcrop of Gramvousa jutting like a single, giant tooth out of the waters. This tiny spit of land is known for the proud Venetian ramparts and fortress crowning its tip and makes for an exciting detour on your way to the sandy shores of Balos.
