Bai Dinh Pagoda

Heavy and solemn, Bai Dinh Pagoda is Vietnam’s biggest religious monument.

Bai Dinh Pagoda is not a solitary structure, but an entire religious complex that sprawls over a total area of 539 hectares in Ninh Binh province. From afar, the combination of both ancient and new pagodas look like giant lotuses that unfurl steadily over the cliffs, creating an awe-inspiring sight as visitors make their way to the complex via the mountain road. Each building is imposing in its own way, such as Tam The Hall’s monolithic structure, upturned roofs and black façade. Bai Dinh is said to be the largest pagoda in the whole of Southeast Asia. Even its three-gate entrance and bell tower are imposing, with the bell tower housing the two largest bells in Vietnam. Beyond that, you can also look forward to several large religious statues, including statues of Dharmapala that weigh twelve tons each. Given the sheer magnitude of its religious artifacts, there is no wonder Bai Dinh is such a popular religious destination.

Tips Before You Go
Don’t forget to allocate sufficient time for this attraction, given the sheer size of the Pagoda. The approach to the Pagoda is also via hundreds of steps, and may be challenging for those not used to physical exertion. Those with mobility issues may find it near impossible too, so it might not be the most suitable monument to visit for the elderly.
