Inwa, Myanmar
Bagaya Monastery

A beautiful monastery made completely of teak.

Arguably one of Inwa’s most unforgettable attractions, Bagaya Monastery is a majestic 7-tiered spire that seems to disappear into the heavens. In addition, it’s also made of nothing but teak, with 267 enormous wood posts supporting the grandiose temple. To top everything off, the monastery is a treat for the eyes, showing off all the best aspects of Burmese architecture with exquisite carvings of lotus flower and peacock motifs.

Despite being built centuries ago, Bagaya Monastery is anything but a relic of days gone by. The building still functions as a living monastery, with a small section serving as a school for novices.
