Bab el-Khemis Gate

Although not as impressive as the neighbouring Bab Mansour, Bab el-Khamis holds its own beauty and history.

The Bab el-Khamis gate is definitely a must-visit if you are in the vicinity of Meknes, Morocco. Even though its beauty is not as comparable to its larger and grander cousin, the Bab Mansour gate, the Bab el-Khamis is no less impressive. Built in the 17th century, the gate is actually only one out of the 12 gates that encircle the medina of Meknes. Its arch is particularly noticeable though, as it is filled with intricate zellij in the colour green. The moment you set your eyes on it, it will be difficult to draw them away, as the green is a rather hypnotic respite from the dull shades of brown and yellow that adorn most of the other places here. While the gate itself is yellowish-beige in colour, the deep contrast from the arch makes this the first thing you notice in a town filled with similar sand-toned colours. What’s more, it also makes the gate a lot more striking, which means that it’s the perfect place for you to take photographs too. So what are you waiting for? Come walk through this beautiful gate and enter the quaint town of Meknes.
