Ba Thien Hau Temple

A temple dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess, Mazu.

The Ba Thien Hau Temple is situated in Saigon, Vietnam, and was built to commemorate the Chinese sea goddess, Mazu. As a patron saint of sailors and fishermen, Mazu rescues those out in the seas by flying around on a mat. Mazuism is related to traditions and beliefs from both Buddhism and Taoism and is hence, an incorporation of various aspects and traditions which have been combined to form a new belief. The temple was built in 1760 and when you enter, you will see massive stone incense burners. The exterior is beautifully designed with intricate curvy roofs and small porcelain figures representing Chinese religious themes and legends. When visiting, do remember to take time to look at all the small corners around the temple as there are many artefacts worth discovering. It will definitely be one spiritually enlightening and religiously enriching journey!

Tips Before You Go
You will find this temple in District 5, which is about a 20-minute drive from the city centre. The visit itself will take you another 20 minutes for a complete tour of the entire compound. Do come properly dressed as you are ultimately visiting a religious site which also happens to be one of the most active temples that are located in Cho Lon.
