Avenida de Mayo

Learn the history of Argentina through its façades.

Named in honor of the May Revolution, which led to Argentine Independence, this historical promenade is the main thoroughfare between the Casa Rosada and the Argentine Congress. If buildings could speak, you’d find them right here, lining up the Avenida de Mayo, dressed in art nouveau, art deco and neoclassic. Start your journey at the Casa Rosada, the Presidential Palace, with its Italian windows and Roman balconies, a perfect example of the local style. Continue ten blocks down the tree-lined boulevard, dotted with ornamental street lamps and an architectural mélange brought about by the aristocrats of the 19th century.

Elaborate domes top buildings, and the occasional caryatids might stop you, beckoning to gaze at their effortless beauty. The Barolo Palace, the embodiment of its architect’s admiration of the Divine Comedy, stands tall and might pull you in to climb your way from Hell to Heaven. At the end of your journey, the Congressional building awaits, crowned by Buenos Aires’ largest cupola. Sitting before the building is a bronze replica of a very familiar figure - “El Pensador”, or, “The Thinker”. In fact, it is a replica made from the original mold. Frantic photography aside, a journey down Avenida de Mayo will surely leave you in awe of the city’s architecture and rich history.
