Coast through the world’s most beautiful (or the most dangerous?) drive.
Connecting the island of Averøy with the mainland via a multitude of islets and small islands over a distance of approximately 8.3 km, the Atlantic Ocean Road is unique stretch of tarmac that lends itself to an amazing experience, taking visitors right out to the ocean’s edge to experience what a coastal drive feels like!
Voted the “Norwegian Construction of the Century”, the road was opened in 1989 and is toll-free. The drive is considered to be the world’s most beautiful, offering tourists an experience packed with coastal sceneries, culture and history like no other. Of course, there is a stark contrast in experience depending on the weather. While a sunny, tranquil day lends itself to a peaceful, scenic drive, the road does become threatening should there be a storm cooking nearby. Should you be (un)lucky enough, you will find the ocean cascading onto the road and your vehicle sprayed with seawater.
Do not fret though, many have undertaken this challenge and have lived to regale their experiences. Despite the weather conditions, the Atlantic Ocean Road is bound to leave behind a story that will forever be etched in your memory!
