Once a stage where gladiators used to battle it out, come and see the historical treasure of Verona.
The magnificent Arena di Verona is a Roman amphitheatre that was actually built in the first century, with it being popularly regarded as the most renowned out of all the Veronese monuments. Its illustrious past saw it playing host to bloody gladiator battles, with spectators coming from far and wide to catch a glimpse of warriors tearing each other apart. What’s more, its 30,000 seats were always filled to capacity as spectators clamoured to get the best views of the bloodsport.
Today, the amphitheatre seems to have mellowed down, instead being famous worldwide as an open-air theatre. It can only hold 15,000 people now though, for security purposes. All sorts of noteworthy performances have been held here, including famous operas such as Aida by Giuseppe Verdi. Besides that, numerous festivals and concerts take place here as well, including Paul McCartney’s concert back in 2013. But if you’re visiting during a period when nothing is taking place, then take comfort in the fact that you won’t be distracted by anything else as you explore the gorgeous architecture of the amphitheatre. The tiers here are carved out of fine Veronese marble, with its intricate designs and weathered appearance giving you the impression that you have been transported back in time. If you visit at night, you might even hear the sound of swords clashing, with some tourists swearing that they can still hear the gladiators fighting. It’s difficult to say for certain if the place is haunted, but it definitely provides for an experience like no other.
