Archaeological Museum of Kraków

See Światowid, the only Slavonic god that has ever been unearthed in the world and more at the Archaeological Museum of Kraków.

A historic museum that was established in 1850, the Archaeological Museum in Kraków is the oldest in Poland. Housed in an old monastery, the museum was established by a group of intellectuals and academics. The earliest collections were private donations by noble Polish families. The grand highlight of this museum is the Światowid, an eight foot tall stone idol with four faces, discovered in the riverbed of Zbruc in 1848. See the highly regarded permanent exhibitions - Malopolska in Prehistory and the Early Middle Ages which features 70,000 years of history from the Neanderthal cavemen to the early-medieval Poles.

Another must-see is the permanent show on the Gods of Ancient Egypt, be awe-inspired by the sight of intricately decorated sarcophagi, mummified cats and other Egyptian antiquities. After soaking in much ancient history, it is a great idea to relax in the lovely gardens of the museum where you can enjoy an unobstructed view of Wawel - Krakow’s Royal Castle.
