Arch of Galerius

This imposing arch has told the stories of an ancient emperor’s victory for more than a thousand years, and continues to tell them today. An ensuring piece of history it is.

With its two sturdy and richly-carved pillars, the Arch of Galerius was constructed under the command of Emperor Galerius to commemorate his victory over the Persians. Carved into its pillars are images depicting important moments in the war: the emperor fearlessly charging into battle, defeating the enemies and forgiving them after their surrender. These images, understood by even the illiterate, helped garner love and respect for the emperor and stabilised his rule. It stood across a busy junction to ensure that everyone would be able to stand in awe of the great emperor’s victory.

Today, the arch remains an important part of life in Thessaloniki. It is the most eye-catching structure in the city and is located near many cafés, making it a perfect meeting point for locals and an easily recognisable landmark for tourists.
