Trade your legs for fins to discover the underwater coral palaces of Ao Sane Beach.
When the beach resort of Phuket is mentioned, it often brings out mixed reactions at times swinging towards displeasure at the sheer crowds flocking to the island throughout the year. Little is it known that even in this touristy hotspot, plenty of undiscovered treasures are found untouched.
Ao Sane is one of them, three small curves of rock interspersed with a little sand that are connected by low rise rock outcrops. There’s little evidence of habitation besides the bamboo and thatched roof bungalows accentuating the bohemian aura of the location. Along this cove, all 200m are sheltered by the spread fronds of palms and the sounds of crowds are unheard of. Wading out just a few feet, one can see through the crystal waters diffracted images of coral forests. A few more meters out into sea and it’s time to snap on that snorkeling gear for a sub-aquatic adventure. The abundant marine life will have you gaping open mouthed in a comic reflection of the clown fish drifting past. You might even chance upon tiny sharks that evoke squeals of adoration instead of fear. High tides mark the season for kayaking, uninterrupted by the roar of jet skis and the waves they generate. For a private conversation with the waves and the palms, take a step into Ao Sane.
