Anna-Seiler-Brunnen

A statue commemorating the founder of Bern’s first hospital.

Located in Marktgasse, near the Käfigturm, the Anna-Seiler-Brunnen depicts a kind-looking lady in a blue dress pouring water into a bowl. The lady in question is none other than Anna Seiler, the founder of Bern’s first hospital, which is still operating today.

In her will, she implored the city to use her house as the site of their first ever hospital, the Inselspital. When the hospital opened, it only had a handful of beds and even fewer attendants. Today, the Inselspital is flourishing, with thousands of staff and receiving more than 200,000 patients per year. The statue today stands as a constant reminder that just a bit of kindness can go a very long way.
