Anhinga Trail

Come see Florida’s diverse marshland wildlife along the Anhinga Trail!

If, heaven forbid, you’ve only got a few hours to see Florida’s Everglades National Park, which trail should you take? The winner is undoubtedly Anhinga Trail. Along the trail, named after the exquisite anhinga bird, you can see a huge number of Florida’s most famous marchland animals, all in less than a mile.

The boardwalk trail winds through a sawgrass marsh, taking you by the homes of alligators, turtles, herons and of course, anhingas. Several observation decks pepper the boardwalk, allowing you a better glimpse of sunbathing alligators stretched out on the grass, or birds nesting on the trees in spring. Look out for the pond apple trees, a species native to Southern Florida with sporting thick trunks and apples that are well-loved by raccoons and other wildlife. You’ll often see cormorants clustering around the trees and if you’re lucky, you might even get to see a cheeky raccoon nabbing an apple off the tree!
