Ancient Olympic Stadium

Home to the ancient Olympic Games that dates back to 776 BCE.

The Ancient Stadium of Olympia is one of the most significant ancient Greek sanctuaries, situated in western Peloponnese in Elis. It is located in a rich, peaceful valley where the Alpheios and Kladeos rivers meet. Made entirely out of marble, it is famous worldwide for being where the ancient Olympic Games used to be hosted every four years, starting back in 776 BCE!

The excavation site is situated within walking distance of the modern village known as Ancient Olympia and it features ruins from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine eras. The nearby Olympia Museum displays a wide array of artefacts that were also dug up during excavation works in the area. Some other attractions include the ancient Doric temple of Hera, the Heraion Peristyle and the Apsidal Building III.
