An ancient city on the island of Rhodes in Greece!
Kameiros is an ancient city situated on Rhodes island in Dodecanese, Greece. It is about 3 kilometres away from Kalavarda village. The ancient city was constructed in three levels. At the top of the hill was a temple compound built to celebrate Athena Kameiras and the stoa. A covered reservoir which could supply almost 400 families was built during the sixth century BC. The stoa later was constructed over that reservoir. The middle section was the main settlement which comprised streets and houses and the lower area was where the Doric temple sat, which was perhaps built to Apollo.
Other buildings included the Fountain House and Peribolos of the Altars which was built in dedication to several other deities. In 1928, the Italian Archaeological School began intensive archaeological works and study of the area until the end of WWII. Many of their findings are now found in the Louvre in Paris and the British Museum. Home to an entire legacy of people spanning across different generations, head down and see for yourself the place where many used to live.
