Amelia Island Lighthouse

The oldest lighthouse in Florida still proudly stands, almost two hundred years after its construction, in its original form.

Florida’s oldest lighthouse stands on Amelia Island’s Fernandina Beach, a pure white, 67-foot-tall cylindrical structure with a unique history that extents back to the Territorial Period. The lighthouse the beach’s most historic landmark – perched high on a bluff just above Egans Creek, it’s a peek into post-revolution America that’s difficult to miss.

Even though it’s almost two centuries old, the lighthouse has never needed restoration due to its sheltered location more than half a mile inland from the coast. In fact, out of the 16 other lighthouses built during Florida’s Territorial Period, Amelia Island Lighthouse is the only one left standing. You can’t climb up the lighthouse, but the tour of the lighthouse grounds is a must-do for all visitors to Amelia Island.
