Älvsborg Fortress

Dreamy and mysterious, the ruins of this fortress have a story to tell.

Located on a small island in the middle of Rivo fjord, the waters of Gota River form a natural moat for the stronghold of Älvsborg fortress. The boat journey from mainland Gothenburg to the fortress is an adventure in itself, on board Stromma archipelago or Svenska Vastkuslinjen boats that will allow you to experience the fresh sea breezes on your face as you cut swiftly through the waves. The fortress itself is one of the most well-preserved ones in Sweden. Originally located on the mainland, the entire fortress was dismantled and transported to the island in the 17th century, where it has since resided ever since. It was built to protect the town of Gothenburg, which was also the main centre for Swedes immigrating to America. As they left home for the last time, Älvsborg fortress would have been one of the last sights they strained to catch.
