Almendres Cromlech

A mystical, ancient site with 95 standing stones.

The Cromlech of the Almendres is an incredible monument of 95 standing stones forming two large stone circles in Evora. This ancient and mysterious site has been around since ancient civilisations first laid the stones to rest in 6000 B.C., and is said to be an ancient ceremonial site dedicated to an old celestial religion.

Within the Iberian Peninsula, the Almendres Cromlech is the biggest group of structured menhirs still in existence, and it belongs to the prehistoric megalithic belt that has defied the test of time in Evora. Ancient patterns and diagrams still adorn the faces of these stones, its meaning lost to the relentlessness of time. That has not stopped historians from taking guesses as to why this bizarre structure was laid out in the first place, with many speculating that the stones were placed according to the builders’ knowledge of star alignments and celestial motions.

Regarded as one of the finest examples of Neolithic architecture, the local authorities have not cordoned off the area and allow visitors free reign when it comes to exploring the area. So step freely onto this ancient sacred land and feel the magic of being part of a history that will endure long after our moment on earth. Gaze into the everlasting as you look at the stones and know that while nothing lasts forever, certain things in our world come pretty close.
