Albula Pass

Valleys, nature reserves and snowcapped peaks are strung along the chain of Albula Pass.

Splitting the canton of Graubünden into two along the north to south is the serpentine form of Albula Pass. Huddled in the metal cage of your car, you ride the back of this asphalt snake over the mountains of the Albula Alps. This isn’t just any other mountainside ride but a tightrope act across an elevation more than 2000m above ground. The 152 year old pass was once the most vital passing in the area, the serpent’s back laden with merchants and travelers traversing the land. Its load has greatly lifted over years, now sought mainly by thrill-seeking road trippers on their chase for breathtaking sights. There isn’t a road feature that doesn’t cross one along the pass, the long strip of grey sweeping over vistas, turning sharply on hairpin loops and bending itself into impossible pretzel-like formations along the rugged plains. Inserted into the landscape are the occasional stone viaducts, the whistling monster of the Rhaetian Railway thundering past if you’re lucky. With the wind against your face and the adrenaline pumping roads ahead, the Albula Pass will have you plastered to the car’s windows the whole way.

Tips Before You Go
Some of the key sights along the way include the Albula canyons from Berguen. However, beyond this point the snow hazard should be taken note of especially close to the periods when the pass is closed off, from November to May, due to weather conditions.
