Al Jalali Fort

Protecting the many lives in Muscat then, either as a fort, a prison, Al Jalali Fort has taken on many lives, settling down as a very private museum now.

A former fort to protect those in Muscat, Al Jalali Fort has been a force to be reckoned with ever since it was birthed. Sitting on the eastern side of the Sea of Oman, its strategic location has often been what its lauded for. Taking on life after life, the fort has continued to be an important part of Muscat.

Protector of those in Muscat in the 16th century, after nearly 4 centuries later, it served to a be a prison. Yet again a protector, only this time, protecting locals from criminals. As his time ran out, the fort took on yet another life in the next century! As of the 21st century, Al Jalali Fort has become a very private museum. Restored to an inkling of his former glory, it now houses important parts of Omani cultural history. Few have been able to enter, namely distinguished guests such as the visiting Heads of State. Whilst the general public may likely never enter, do go up for a look around the surrounding area, its grandeur will astound you. A prime location that also boasts of great views of the Sea of Oman, take a leisurely walk around if you’d like, taking in all that Al Jalali Fort is. A key piece of history that shapes the world of the Omanis today, this is one location you’d not want to miss.
