Here rests one of the Mughal Empire’s brilliant rulers.
Anyone who has opened a history textbook would have heard about the Mughal Empire, and perhaps one of its most notable emperors, Akbar the Great. A great leader deserves an equally great resting place, and that very place is Akbar’s Mausoleum, located in Agra, India.
Made with red sandstone and white marble, this 17th century monument commissioned by Akbar’s son Jahangir is undoubtedly fit for a king. With Hindu and Muslim influences, striking red sandstone and marble combine together to form a spectacular architectural wonder. The mausoleum begins at a large gateway known as “Buland Darwaza”, an intimidating arch at approximately 3 floors high. Within the compound it is not unusual to be met by some furry friends, such as monkeys or antelopes, roaming around the Mughal-influenced gardens. Visit Akbar’s Mausoleum for some quiet contemplation on a ruler whose decisions influenced a great nation.
